Best Budget Destinations for Spring

Spring brings more than just melting snow and Easter Eggs! It also brings great budget travel options. Between the year’s heaviest travel times—the holidays and summer vacation—it isn’t hard to land yourself in an awesome place that won’t break the bank. College students, did you hear that? Spring break options that won’t contribute to your student loans! Here are a few of the best ones to think about for your spring excursion.

Santo Domingo

Santo, as the locals call it, is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. I picked up a hitchhiker from Santo Domingo this week, and he had plenty to tell me about the beauty of his country. I speak only basic Spanish, but I understood enough to gather that in his opinion, the beaches of Santo Domingo are the best in the world. Take it from a local, folks. You information doesn’t get more authentic than that. Besides beaches, the city also has plenty of cultural centers, like museums and art galleries, as well as food prepared by top-notch Caribbean chefs.

 Myrtle Beach

South Carolina is home to many beautiful areas, one of which is Myrtle Beach. This spring, take advantage of affordable airline tickets and accommodations so you can enjoy it for yourself! You can go to an amusement park, try mini golf, go to the movies, take a helicopter ride, or watch a minor-league baseball game, all for under $30 per activity. Or, just hang out on the beach all day—after all, the beach is both fun and free!

 Cancun

Tickets to Cancun aren’t too expensive, so why not take advantage of the cheap price and head to Cancun for a few days this spring? There is plenty to do while you’re there, from the beach to historical tours. Cancun is home to several ancient Mexican ruins, so you can get your fill of history as well as sunshine when you visit. You can also take a trip to the botanical gardens, nature preserve, or archaeological museum. Also, if you’re into the party scene, you’ll find plenty of fun to keep you happy in Cancun!

 Great Smokey Mountains National Park

North Americans, save on transportation and opt to drive instead. For many on the continent, Great Smokey Mountains National Park in the state of Kentucky isn’t too far to make a road trip. Once you arrive, you can stay in your own cabin and spend days wandering the mountains. The national park has endless hiking options, so you can choose whether you’d like to visit a specific site like Chimney Tops, take a trek to waterfalls, or just wander up paths that snake through the mountains. With so much to see outside, you won’t need to spend anything at all on entertainment.

 New Orleans

Crash at a cheap hotel and spend your days enjoying everything that the city’s many districts have to offer. Wander through the artsy stuff at the Warehouse District, stroll through the Garden District, bike through Mid-City, and gallery hop in the Bywater area. You can find a discount for one of the many museums, or you can just check out all the free stuff there is to do in the city. Don’t forget, though, to try some authentic Cajun food while you’re there!

 Phoenix, Arizona

If you can stand the heat, this is a great budget destination! In late spring, when the weather starts to heat up, Phoenix’s tourist population dwindles to pretty much nothing, so the fancy resorts in the area drop their prices drastically. You can stay at a really nice place, like the Pointe Hilton, for an unbelievable low rate. Take advantage of the heat, and still stay cool in the pool! Other attractions in the area also often offer late spring-early fall discounts for the low season. If you really need a break from the weather, you can also take a day trip north from Phoenix to Sedona or Flagstaff, where the weather is nothing less than perfect in the springtime.

Spring travel is cheaper than traveling during high season and you avoid the pitfalls of the off season when the weather is often bad and some attractions may be closed. These cities are great value destinations for your Spring getaway.
