The one thing they have in common is a precarious economic environment.
Most of these cities have both safe neighborhoods and areas you really want to avoid. After studying the data distributed by Neighborhood Scout and Forbes, outlining the most dangerous cities in the US, we created our list of the 10 most dangerous cities in the US, displayed here in no particular order.
1 East St. Louis, IL
Statistically, your chances of becoming a victim of violent crime in East St. Louis is 1 in 30. That’s pretty scary. The overall crime rate is 63 per one thousand residents. However, there are some safe havens within the city too. According to the Neighborhood Scout, the top three safest neighborhoods are Edgemont, State St/N 69 St, and Bond Ave/ S 24th St.
2 Camden, NJ
Camden has a crime rate of 58 per one thousand residents and your chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is 1 in 17. The safe neighborhoods in Camden are Westfield Ave/ N 36th St, Rutgers U-Camden / S 3rd St, Fairview, and Linden St / N 9th St. These safe havens are found on the outskirts of the city and along the Delaware River.
3 Monroe, LA
The rate of assault in Monroe is roughly ten times that of the national rate according to the data from Neighborhood Scout. The crime rate is very high at 111 per one thousand residents. There is a significant amount of property crime (burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft) in this city, where your chance of becoming a victim of said crime is 1 in 12. The safest neighborhoods in Monroe are Fairbanks/Cargas, Swartz, and Millhaven.
4 Alexandria, LA
Alexandria has one of the highest crime rates in the US, rating 105 per one thousand residents. Similar to Monroe, LA, in Alexandria you have the same chance of becoming a victim of property crime: 1 in 12. Furthermore, based on the number of murders in Alexandria, it experiences one of the higher murder rates in the nation.
5 Memphis, TN
Memphis has a crime rate of 74 per one thousand residents. Your chance of becoming a victim of violent or property crime is 1 in 13 and your chance of becoming a victim of violent crime is 1 in 57. This city has one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the nation too. More than 97% or the communities in Tennessee have a lower crime right than Memphis.
6 Birmingham, AL
Birmingham has a total of 17,625 annual crimes. That is insane! The population is pretty large though with 212,461 residents. Its crime rate is 83 per one thousand residents. Additionally, your chance of becoming a victim of property crime is 1 in 15. The safer neighborhoods are Cahaba Valley Rd / Double Oak Ln, Little Turtle Dr / Keith Dr, Brook Highland, Watkins, and about six others.
7 Wilmington, DE
Wilmington’s crime rate is 73 per one thousand residents, which is similar to Memphis. More than 95% of communities in Delaware have a lower crime rate than Wilmington. Compared to cities with a similar population, this city is no good. The neighborhoods on the safe side are Foulk Woods/Brandywine, Westover Hills / Mount Cuba, Shellburne / Carrcroft, and several others.
8 St. Louis, MO
St. Louis has a crime rate of 82 per one thousand residents, which is very close to Birmingham’s. The popular is pretty large in St. Louis: 315, 685, explaining the higher total of violent and property crime, which is 25, 853. Your chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is 1 in 12. The safest neighborhoods in St. Louis are White House, Christopher Dr / Cripple Creek Dr, Baumgartner Rd / Old Baumgartner Rd, Oakville, and several others.
9 Bessemer, AL
The crime index provided by Neighborhood Scout shows that Bessemer is safer than 0% of US cities. The crime rate is 117 per one thousand residents, which is one of the highest rates we’ve seen yet. The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is only 1 in 9! That is scary. Head on over to Concord / Rock Creek, which is one of the safest neighborhoods in Bessemer as it seems to be pretty isolated from the city.
10 Detroit, MI
Detroit is one of those obvious cities that appears on the list. It is no surprise as you often hear about how dangerous Detroit is on the news. It is safer than 4% of US cities though, unlike Bessemer which is safer than none. It has a crime rate of 59 per one thousand residents and your chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is 1 in 17. The city is broken down very geometrically, so on the map provided by Neighborhood Scout, you can see that the safety rating varies from block to block. Definitely be careful when visiting this city, so that you don’t end up somewhere unsafe.
