Christmas is generally a time when people travel, but usually travelers head home for the holidays. While that is traditional, who says you have to stick to tradition, even for Christmas? Why not change things up and go away for Christmas? Christmas may seem a long time away, but you’ll want to start planning now, especially if you have to let family know that you’re going your own way this year. If you’re thinking about taking a trip this year, here are some reasons why you definitely should go away this Christmas.
Skip the Family Drama
Christmas is supposed to be a time for joy and peace, but all too often it becomes a time for stress and strife! If your family gatherings are anything but merry, it might be better to skip the reunion this time. Why put yourself through all that? Take some time to relax and recharge, miles away from all the crazy. Christmas is a great season to spend time with family, but it’s also a great season for spending time with yourself… on a beach somewhere… with a glass of wine in your hand.
Enjoy Time with Family
Of course, if you love spending time with your family – immediate or extended – you can still have a family Christmas and get away for the holidays! Lose the Christmas stress by spending time with your loved ones in a place where relaxation rules the day. Let the room service and restaurants take care of the details while you have fun with family! Keep yourself out of the kitchen, for once. You’ll never forget these getaway memories of Christmas far away from home.
Can you really save money by going on vacation? If it means skipping the shopping, the cookies, the wrapping paper, the electricity bill, and all that pizzazz, then the answer is yes! Christmas is expensive. If you can skip all the expenses entirely, you might find that you can take a vacation and still have money left over. It may not have worked in “Christmas with the Kranks,” but it should certainly work for you.
Escape the Cold
If you live in a cold location, you’re probably over the whole “white Christmas” thing. Let’s face it: it’s cold, it’s wet, and it’s not fun at all. Christmas can come without snow, though. So why stick out another freezing cold Christmas when you could do somewhere warm? Florida is wonderful in December! So is Phoenix, Las Vegas, and the Caribbean. Go somewhere nice! It doesn’t have to be fancy, as long as it’s nice and sunny. Snowmen are overrated, anyway.
Get to the Cold
On the other end of the weather spectrum, those of you in hot locations surely would love to experience a white Christmas! Travel during Christmas is never particularly cheap, but going to a cold place in the cold season is usually fairly affordable. This may also be your perfect opportunity for a ski vacation! If every Christmas past has brought only blue skies and sunshine, your winter wonderland awaits somewhere nice and cold.
Make a Change
Traditions are wonderful, but you don’t have to stick to them in order to have a great Christmas. How many years’ worth of photos do you and your family have wearing the same hats in front of the same decorations? Yes, it’s the way you’ve always done it, but this year is a great time to take some new photos in new places! A family Christmas photo in front of a palm tree or the Eiffel Tower would certainly shake things up—in the best way possible.
You Won’t Have to Give (Or Get) Unwanted Gifts
Everyone has that one family member who already has everything. Or that niece that just can’t be pleased. Or that cousin who gives the strangest gifts—and asks about them later! Get away from all of that when you give yourself the gift of a getaway, or pitch in for a trip as a family in lieu of gifts. Put that Christmas spending money to good use, for once! The thrift stores may be emptier and the exchange lines shorter, but you and your family will have lovely memories, which are more valuable than any packages or bows.
Experiencing a Different Culture
Every culture has a unique way to experience Christmas! You can enjoy picturesque Christmas markets in Germany, sip Caribbean rums in Jamaica, or meet Santa in Ontario this year. Of course, you don’t have to travel to a new country or even a new state to take part in a new cultural celebration! Each town has its very own way of doing the holidays, so a trip just a few hours away can give you an entirely new experience. Maybe you can even pick up some new Christmas traditions along the way! You never know what food, fun, and music you might encounter—and fall in love with.
Places to Go
If these sound like good excuses to you, all you have to do is decide where to go! If you want to go somewhere warm, try going to Anguilla. This is a calm, sunny place to lay around on the beach. Or, go to San Diego, where you’ll find sunshine and sand. Mexico, Orlando, and even Australia are great Christmas destinations for sun worshippers! If you want to go somewhere cold, Aspen, Colorado is the ideal ski town. Or, head to British Columbia, the Netherlands, or Boston. There are many wonderful places to go! It’s all up to you.
Are you convinced yet? There are so many reasons why you should go away this Christmas! Think about it—this could be your best holiday decision ever! Make some new memories and new traditions this Christmas. You’ll be so glad you did!
