Save Big: A Review of 1800Stay.com Wholesale Travel Platform

I don’t get to travel as often as I’d like. That whole champagne taste on a beer budget thing. And it seems that hotels are just getting more and more expensive. So I’m always on the lookout for ways I can get more for my travel buck.

A friend of mine was telling me about a program he said could save me money on hotels, airfares, car rentals. Pretty much anything travel-related. I was skeptical at first, but then he showed me the rates he could get. Unbelievable. I immediately compared them to the best rates available on Expedia, Hotels.com, and Travelocity. What really killed me was when I had him pull up the rates his site was showing for the same dates, at the same hotel I had booked in New York for a long weekend in April. Just over half what I had paid. Arrgh!

So, the good news was, I could get in on this. He sent me an invitation for a Boomerang account. This is a free version of the program that allows paid members to invite their friends and family to try the program for a limited time at no cost. Boomerang members don’t get the full discount on their bookings; they get half the savings a full account would receive (which is still pretty awesome) and the person who invited them gets half the savings in Reward Credits. (more on that later)

I was so shocked by the savings on this that I wanted to share it. Plus, I wanted to make sure to find all the different ways I could save. So here’s my review of the 1800Stay wholesale program.

1800Stay.com Wholesale Travel Platform and Program Review:

What Is It?

1800Stay.com is a wholesale travel platform.

1800Stay offers rates that cannot be advertised or offered to the public. No online travel booking site like Expedia, Booking.com, Hotels.com, Travelocity, or even Kayak can offer these rates. Their contracts with the hotels prohibits it. Yes, you are special.

Account holders have access to savings of up to 60% on hotels, resorts, airfare, cruises, car rentals, fun activities and more.

Why Do They Do It?

This was my big question. I wanted to be sure it was legit. And, it is.

Hotels, in particular, often have excess inventory. They would rather know that all of their rooms will be filled at a potentially lower rate than leave rooms sit empty. That’s where the wholesale platform comes in.

Travel companies also know that travelers with access to the private wholesale platform travel more often and are more likely to share their experiences. Unbeatable rates mean that travelers may try hotels they wouldn’t normally even see in their searches. Special deals on activities can be a great way to introduce travelers to restaurants and other businesses and services.

How Do I Join?

You can’t just go to the site and sign up. 1800Stay accounts are only available by invitation. You may be contacted directly by the company if you have opted in to receive information when filling out a form either online or at a resort or hotel.

You can also receive an invitation for a referral Boomerang account from a friend or family member. Boomerang account holders will be given the opportunity to upgrade to a full account. Then they can invite their own friends and family to create a Boomerang.

How Does It Work?

Once you have an account, you can log in to 1800Stay.com and search pretty much like you would on any booking site. You can sort by all the usual things: price, rating, name. You can also sort by the biggest discount, so you can see the hotels you can save the most on at the top of the list.

Booking online is easy. You can use any major credit card or book with Reward Credits. There is a Travel Concierge option if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for or if you need more help.

You can earn Reward Credits every time you travel, through certain promotions, and when your friends and family travel on bookings made through a Boomerang account that is tied to your full account.

1800Stay offers a 110% Price Guarantee. If you find a better price (same hotel, same room type, same dates, rate available to the general public) within 24 hours of booking, they’ll give you a credit of 110% of the difference. As with all these types of things, be sure to read the terms and conditions.

The full paid account is good for a lifetime, with a nominal annual renewal fee.

What’s a Boomerang Account?

1800Stay wants you to be able to spread the word and earn Rewards for doing so. If you have a full account, you can invite an unlimited number of friends and family to try out the program for free.

You just use the easy Boomerang Invite link to send either email invitations or to post an invitation to your Facebook.

Invitees can create a referral account that lets them see how 1800Stay.com works and how much they can save. The account is active for up to one year.

Boomerang members get half the discount you would receive on the same booking; you get the rest! When your Boomerang friends travel, you receive Reward Credits equal to half the full account savings.

Boomerang members can upgrade at any time at a special referral rate to start receiving the full account savings.

If one of your Boomerang friends upgrades while their account is active, you get a commission (since you will no longer receive half of their savings)

What are Reward Credits?

You can earn Reward Credits every time you travel, through certain promotions, and when your friends and family travel on bookings made through a Boomerang account that is tied to your full account.

Reward Credits have no cash value but can be redeemed for accommodations, vacations, car rentals, airfares, even Amazon gift cards!

Not only do you get the wholesale savings on your travel, but you earn Rewards Credits for future travel or other rewards.

Bottom Line?

1800Stay is the real deal. You won’t save 60% on every hotel, every time, but they show you right up front how much you are saving. And the savings are real. Checking against the big online sites shows that their comparisons are accurate.

It’s so simple to use and it really can pay for itself in just one or two hotel bookings. Not to mention the savings on other things like airfare, weekly resort stays, cruises, restaurants and activities.

I have up to a year to upgrade to a full, paid account but I’m not going to wait. I figure one or two more stays will essentially pay for my upgrade. A no-brainer, since I do travel several times a year, sometimes for business, sometimes just for fun.

If you get the opportunity to join 1800 Stay, grab it.

I travel quite a bit for work, and use 1800Stay almost exclusively to book my hotel travel. The site is easy to use, and prices are great. Very good experience with their custom service people if things go wrong. Much cheaper that Hotels.com, Expedia and the rest. At least on the hotels and cruises! Not great with the flights.
