Whether it’s for a bachelorette party, an informal high school or college reunion, or just the need for a fun-filled girls getaway, some cities roll out the pink carpet for traveling groups of women more so than others. According to AAA, “girl trips” generate roughly 5-billion dollars annually for the travel industry. Taking such things as shopping, dining options, accommodations, and cool places to sip cocktails into consideration, these are the top-rated cities in America for girls just wanting to have fun.
1 New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans, often considered the official party destination of the world, offers a plethora of activities for daytime and nighttime fun. There is absolutely no indulgence which cannot be fulfilled.
Shopping the unique and eclectic boutiques on Magazine Street or browsing the many antique stores on Royal Street is enough to keep everyone entertained for hours on end. Since New Orleans is the official home of Cajun cooking, the whole gang can learn how to make traditional chicken or shrimp gumbo and other mouth-watering delicacies at Langlois Culinary Crossroads.
When the sun goes down there won’t be any problem finding a suitable nightclub if this is on the agenda. From dignified upscale lounge’s too decrepit (but fun) dive bars, it’s all there. Live music is a given. Pick the genre but expect jazz. Or, your group can grab a drink to go at any number of places and stroll around Bourbon Street taking in the buzz of activity while watching street musicians pound on empty paint buckets for tips. At the stroke of midnight, the burlesque show at Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse is a popular treat for girls and guys alike.
It would be remiss to not mention New Orleans being ranked number one in the country for scrumptious desserts. Cafe du Monde, Morning Call, and Gracious Bakery are only three of the better-known spots for appeasing a sweet tooth in proper fashion.
2 San Francisco, California
No city spells fun better than San Francisco with its reputation for great restaurants, an abundance of world-class wine, and its pedestrian-friendly streets. It’s a friendly city and one of the best-rated for a girls trip.
A full day can easily be spent taking in the wonderment of Fishermans Wharf. Feasting on fresh crabmeat followed by a decadent dessert at Ghiradelli’s Chocolate is almost a requirement. Gaze across the bay at Alcatraz while grooving to the best street musicians in town. Street musicians and performers must be approved and licensed by the city so visitors don’t get hassled for tips. Licenses are hard to come by for this very reason.
If Chinese fare suits everyone’s palette it’s impossible to find anywhere more authentic than in San Francisco’s China Town. Extra time should be allowed for visiting the small shops. They’re loads of fun and you never know what you’ll stumble across.
For shopping, Hayes Street is crowded with chic boutiques and one-of-a-kind shops. When lunch rolls around there are a vast number of downright cool cafes of every imaginable ethnic persuasion for every single eating habit, be it carnivorous, vegetarian, or full-out vegan.
If a serious full-blown night of partying and getting stupid has all the yeas, just tell the cabbie or limo driver to head for Mission. The streets are lined with bars so as a word of caution, don’t drive. If a more sophisticated evening of tasting vino sounds more like it, Claudine French Eatery & Wine Bar showcases daily vintages for only one dollar an ounce. Of course, Napa Valley is only a day trip away…
For a real blast and for creating the perfect long lasting memory, solve the mystery at Wilson & Wilson as you don detective hats and scrutinize every detail of a crime. Perhaps, one of your friends might even be guilty? Don’t be fooled.
Just a few minutes south of San Fransisco lies Mar Vista Stables where your group can rent horses and ride them along the ocean, but not before riding through open fields of wildflowers leading to the shore. You’ll see dolphins, hawks, seals, and if lucky, maybe a whale.
3 Nashville, Tennessee
Broadway. Broadway. Broadway. This is the only street anyone in your party needs to know. The crowded bars of Nashville’s lower Broadway wear the Tierra as the bachelorette party capital of the universe. It isn’t unusual to see large groups of girls giving the bride-to-be one last hoorah before her big day.
Nashville is where the future country stars of tomorrow let their talents shine at places like Tootsies Orchard Lounge, the Stage, and Robert’s Western World. If a more subdued atmosphere is preferred, the folks who write the hit songs can be seen and heard at the Bluebird Cafe, Bobby’s Idle Hour, and the Commodore Lounge.
A fun time for all can be had by hopping aboard the big pink bus belonging to NashTrash Tours for a wacky view of the city with an even wackier local tour guide. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame or Nashville’s East Side for more of a rock-music party atmosphere at places like the 5-Spot or the 3 Crow Bar.
Fine dining is HUGE in Nashville with eclectic restaurants galore in Nashville’s West End. This is also where a life-sized replica of the Parthenon is located. If mingling and partying with a college crowd sounds like a good time, the West End is home to the prestigious Vanderbilt University and you’ll find many of the students dancing the night away in a section called the Gulch. Make sure to stop by the Tin Roof for the ultimate experience.
While these are but three of the most highly rated places for a girl’s trip, it would be hard to not have a great time no matter where your group finds themselves. Want some more ideas? Check out more great destinations for a girls only trip.
